Food & Pharmaceuticals
Starch and starch derivatives are the most important ingredients in food industry. They play a critical role in stabilizing the textural properties of a variety of processed food products. Modified starches are normally added to food products as a stabilizer and thickener. Additionally they also provide beneficial functional attributes like water binding, freeze-thaw stability, emulsion stabilization, texture improvement, rheology control and shelf life improvement. The lower cost of starches compared to other stabilizers and thickeners provide a significant economic advantage to the food processors.
Modified starches are also utilized in pharmaceutical industries. They are used in tablets as disintegrants for faster delivery of active ingredients. Pregelatinized starches are commonly employed as the directly compressible excipients.
Furthermore, highly modified products are used as a lubricant for latex products like rubber gloves and rubber threads.
